What is SEO?
SEO stands for search engine optimization and refers to the practice of identifying keywords relevant to the goals of an organization’s website and then generating content that will cause the website to rank higher in search engine results. This will help prospects looking for a solution to their problems or interests find a company’s web site who could help them with their needs. Why do I need this?
You need visitors to come to your website so they can learn about what you do, and you can present a value proposition to them. Hopefully this leads to a sale and the the further success of your business.
Getting the traffic to come to your website is the trick, of course, and there are only two ways you can do that – paid traffic and search engine traffic.
*Search engine traffic is free, at least in the sense that you are not directly paying for a person to click on a link that will lead them to your website. There is a fair amount of time and associated cost involved with producing a website that can rank well in search engines, and SEO is the process of producing and optimizing a website so it can do just that.
SEO has many moving parts and details to it, although it is by no means impossible to figure out. Generally, there are 3 basic strategies for approaching SEO strategies for websites.
3 basic content SEO strategies
The goal of SEO is to create the content that lets your web searching prospects find you. Practically every page on your website is an opportunity to do this, and looking at these three areas is an excellent place to start the process of creating an SEO strategy or refining an existing one.
Read on for the basic steps in thinking about each one of these.
1. Rewrite and optimize existing content
Why Rewrite What’s Already There?
It’s an all too common problem where an organization creates a website, writes a lot of content for it, but didn’t optimize it for search engines. Your core pages such as home, about us, the FAQ, services will be the most important pages to evaluate to make sure they are search engine optimized.
Perhaps the title tags were neglected, or the meta-descriptions were quickly thrown together, or maybe there are no alt tags on the images. This is likely costing you some easily fixable search engine traffic that could bring you more sales. The good news is that with the right adjustments, your content can fairly quickly invite google to show you to your prospects.
I will evaluate your existing content for SEO missed opportunities, and then create a keyword strategy, and then rewrite your content using best practices to optimize it for search engines.
2. Create New Content for SEO
How does new content help SEO?
A really great way to make google want to show your content to potential visitors is to make brand new stuff for key areas.
Core Pages – If you are creating a website you need to write the content for your core pages, and optimizing it for search from the beginning will be a huge benefit to you later on. Not only will you have a better chance to have traffic flowing your way, you’ll be ahead of the game on fine-tuning your website for its best performance.
Supporting Pages – These include such things as case studies, blog posts and articles. These are used to serve the broad purpose of helping to funnel visitors to your site. Each supporting item needs to be mapped to a part of the buyers journey, and highlight a pathway to your buy page. To do a quick calculation of the work that needs to be done here, multiply the number of products and services you offer by 4, and this will give you an idea about the number of supporting SEO items you need to create. Multiply that by the number of customer types you have (buyer personas, portraits, etc) and that will add even more to your content possibilities.
The vision here is to imagine the most likely reasons a prospect might want your product or service, and fill your website with content that speaks to those items. This can be a very comprehensive project, but very satsifying as well. Not only are you doing the work that needs to be done to attract new customers and keep existing customers, but you will be establishing yourself as a thought-leader for your industry.
3. Create an SEO Magnet
What is an SEO Magnet?
An SEO magnet is a well thought-out collection of 20-100 (or more!) pages that reside on your web site and are optimized with content designed to attract searches from keywords that are relevant to your organization. The SEO magnet is a lengthy and thorough treatment of a topic your prospects will find interesting and helpful. Because the document intends to be so thorough and comprehensive, search engines will favor this content over less comprehensive content, and more importantly, your website visitors will find this valuable.
The document can easily take up an entire section on its own on your website. It will be complete with a hierarchy of h1, h2, and h3 headers showing that the content is thoughtfully organized. It will have anchor text throughout the document, along with chapters and a menu of chapter headings. It will essentially be a small book on your website, that search engines can find. Anytime someone looks for the keywords that your SEO magnet is optimized for, search engines will see that your content is a great resource for those who are looking for it.
